Rather than rocket back to the Bay Area at Patrick’s expense—$5,000 one way for the private jet—I elected to keep my rental car and drive back to Palo Alto. I had driven the stretch of 101 between Santa Barbara and San Jose on a number of occasions and didn’t mind it. I often used the four-hour drive as a time to think—about anything. I made the mistake, however, of switching on the radio in search of some mood music. What I got instead was LaRonda Hillman. She was guesting on Hayden Matthews’s afternoon show, a nationally syndicated talk show. Matthews, who politically leans so far to the right that he needs a safety net in his studio, was addressing the subject of cloning; in particular, LaRue Williams announced intentions earlier in the day to clone himself another half-dozen times.

LaRonda was on LaRue like a hump on a camel. “He’s usurping God’s will again, Hayden. Years ago, there was an expression that described the brothers and sisters who couldn’t dance or had no rhythm. ‘He or she’s got no soul,’ they’d say. By promoting cloning, the IFL and the NCAA are creating a soulless society. Only God can give man a soul, and that happens at conception. A clone is like an industrial product.” Hayden Matthews could not get in a word of his own—rare for him. “Cloning has created an elitism among African American men that is unprecedented in our society. A man like Mr. Williams nurtures his ego with each recreation, and every insanely jealous male out there, with his lame brain and limp dick, shouts out another chorus of ‘Go, Brother, Go.’”

How did I know LaRonda would eventually get around to the subject of Patrick? “That young man has a moral obligation to denounce cloning. God placed him in this situation for a purpose. I think he knows it, but his agent, Payne Holden, is keeping him from endorsing our campaign. He’s refused to even consider the possibility of his client’s cooperation right to my face—on my lunch tab. Mr. Holden is as responsible as the cloning scientists themselves for supplanting natural selection. He, like the cloning services, is assisting in skewing the course of human evolution.”

It must have been God’s mercy because I suddenly escaped the station’s FM signal. The crackling sound of static played like a symphony in my ears. LaRonda Hillman had been silenced. It felt like an act of God.
